"Whatever you are, be a good one." - Abraham Lincoln
I've always held a firm belief that you should give your best to everything you do. But it is something that is much easier said than done. It's easy to give your all to something you love to do and have a passion for. But what about when you're doing something you don't particularly enjoy? What if you don't like your job? What if you committed yourself to a group that you've lost passion for? What if you just simply can't stand doing the dishes?
I've had my fair share of jobs and obligations that I disliked (looking at you, pulling weeds). The temptation for me in those circumstances is to just do enough to get by. Do enough so I'm not noticeably slacking, but no more than the minimum. Why expend energy on something I don't want to do? Here's why: we owe it to ourselves, we owe it to each other, and we owe it to our God.
You owe it to yourself to give it your all. If you don't give it your best shot, I truly believe you'll never get to know yourself well. I always find that after I've faced a difficult challenge, I discover parts of myself that I didn't know existed. Parts that are brave, tough, and courageous. These are not traits I would normally assign to myself. If I never put myself out there 110%, I continue to be the shy, afraid, cowardly person I know myself to be. You may also find enjoyment where you didn't expect it. Things tend to be more fun when you are succeeding at them- how will you succeed if you're not trying your hardest?
You owe it to the people around you. This may not be your dream job or you may not want to work on this group project on a Friday night, but it is somebody else's passion or somebody else's important grade. Have you ever worked on something you loved doing but felt roadblocked by someone because they were slacking? It's annoying, isn't it? You don't want to be that roadblock for someone else. If you are stuck doing something you dislike, the least you can do is help someone else achieve their dream!
You owe it to our wonderful Creator. One thing I have to consistently remind myself of, especially during a tough time, is that everything is happening for a reason. God knows what He's doing. He will never give us something we cannot handle. Even looking back at my life so far, I can see times when I thought things were just the worst, but they were actually working towards a greater purpose. We cannot expect to wallow in self pity when things are tough until they get better. We must work towards better. We must trust that God knows what he's doing. And you know what else? He created us to be these magnificent beings each with unique traits and talents. Giving anything less than our all is a disservice to the One who gives us more than we need, and frankly, more than we deserve.
So today, I'm going all in. Whatever I do, I'm giving my absolute best. When life pushes back, I'm pushing back harder. I owe it to myself, because I am strong and resilient. I owe it to those around me, because everyone counts on each other. I owe it to my God. He has blessed me endlessly and it is quite literally the least I can do. Will you join me?
